Join us for a what should be a great weekend camping in the scenic Mt. Charleston Wilderness area. The main purpose for the trip is to hike Mt. Charleston Peak, the highest peak in Nevada at 11,916 ft. (3,632 m). This is a very strenuous hike not suitable for the novice hiker but there are plenty of great hiking options for easier hikes in the area as well. This should be a good time of the year to hike here with cooler temperatures and the air quality should be a bit better than in California due to the fires.
Drive up to the campground and set up your tents. I have secured a large group site at Mahogany Grove Group Campground to ensure that we can keep a proper social distance.
We’ll get up early, drive into the small town of Mt Charleston, and start our hike up to Charleston Peak. We will do the North to South Loop (16.6 mi, 5,078′ el. gain). For those of you not ready for this, there are several shorter and easier hikes available to do instead and perhaps spend some time exploring in town. We’ll likely split in two groups, one doing the peak hike and the other picking an easier hike from a number of options.
In the evening we’ll all hang out in camp making dinner etc.
After packing up camp we’ll go back into town and hike up to Cathedral Rock a short hike of about 3 miles round trip and about 1000′ el. gain. Afterwards we’ll have some lunch together in the picnic area before heading home. Some of us may decide to spend some time in Las Vegas, have dinner there and drive home later in the evening.
The cost is $40 per person to help cover camping and Meetup expenses etc. There is more payment info at: https://www.meetup.com/LAOutdoors/events/273461561
Please sign up there too and provide payment as it is much easier for me to manage things and who I admit on the trip in one place.
NOTE: The event is cross posted and you are admitted on the trip in the order of payment, not in the order of signing up.
This trip will be a bit different in that we’ll need to take special precautions due to the pandemic. Please adhere to preventive measure guidelines at all times, both while hiking and in camp etc.
As an organizer I assume absolutely no responsibility for you, your safety, or your belongings. I am simply a “trip-companion”, nothing more.
